Your first idea is a doorway, not a house.
Most early founders get this backwards. They fall in love with version one and treat every signal that it's wrong as a personal failure.
But look at how the companies you admire actually started.
Slack was a byproduct. Its founders were building a video game called Glitch. The game failed. The internal chat tool they'd made to coordinate the team turned out to be the real product.
Instagram began as Burbn, a cluttered check-in app with photos buried inside it. The founders noticed people only used the photo feature, stripped everything else away, and rebuilt around that one behavior.
YouTube started as a video dating site. Nobody uploaded dating videos. People uploaded everything else.
The pattern is not that these founders were wrong and got lucky. The pattern is that they treated the first idea as a probe.
The first idea's real job
The first idea exists to put you in contact with reality.
You cannot learn what a market wants from a whiteboard. You learn it by shipping something and watching what people actually do — which features they open, which they ignore, what they ask for that you didn't build.
That information is the asset. The original idea is just the delivery mechanism for getting it.
When you hold the first idea loosely, a failed feature isn't a wound. It's data.
Attachment is the real risk
The danger for a new founder isn't being wrong early. Being wrong early is guaranteed.
The danger is staying wrong because admitting it feels like losing.
Sunk-cost thinking whispers that you've invested too much to change course. But the months you spent building version one weren't wasted if they taught you what version two should be. They're only wasted if you ignore what they taught you.
How to hold it
A few ways to keep the first idea in its proper place:
- Write down what you believe and why, so you can tell later whether reality agreed.
- Ship the smallest version that lets real people interact with it.
- Watch behavior, not compliments. What people do outranks what they say.
- When one small piece gets disproportionate love, follow it. That's usually the door.
The founders who win aren't the ones who were right first.
They're the ones who stayed in the conversation long enough to become right.
